Lucy Gets Bronze + Meandering Around Yokohama

Benton arrived late the night before, and immigration took a long time, so there wasn’t much to log (by the time he arrived, it was about 8 pm, so we just grabbed some quick dinner from 7/11 and then went to bed).

Around 6 am, Lucy got up to start getting ready for the wushu competition (she competed around 10 am). Benton also got up (a bit later), and got ready. While Lucy warmed up at wushu, Benton went for a short walk around the neighborhood, picking up a red bean pastry for breakfast and then heading to watch Lucy compete.

At the competition, Lucy went last in her event, which was nice because she was able to know which place she got immediately after competing. Despite much talk about how tired and sore she was, Lucy achieved a casual bronze medal and was overall very happy with her performance.

After the award ceremony finished (around noon), we walked back to the hotel (Chisun Hotel Yokohama) and then walked to Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse (an old warehouse turned into a shopping/eating area). At the warehouse, Lucy got some flavored honey drink mixers (like a concentrate that is mixed with water), and then we went to lunch in the food hall where we got egg over rice and also a bowl with tuna, salmon, and some other fish + some veggies in it (total cost was like $16 for both of us). Then, Lucy went back to the competition to watch the afternoon, while Benton roamed around the Kujira no Senaka (Whale’s Back) (cool building on top of the boat terminal). Then, Lucy came back and met Benton, who walked along the shoreline, in a shopping district (Motomachi), where we roamed for a bit to check out some stores, got tea at Sandglass Yokohama, and then went to get udon (which was very good) at 讃岐手打うどん 麗.

Finally, we headed to hang out a bit in Yamashita Park, before heading back to the hotel and sleeping around 9:30 pm.

Notable things:

  • The hotel bathroom mirror has a small section above the sink that doesn’t fog up during showering; Benton may try to find an equivalent for the NYC apartment bathroom

  • Benton discovered the hard way that the Japanese do not have public trash cans, and ended up carrying around his coffee cup for quite a while longer than he was planning.

  • Lucy really liked the Earl Grey tea we got (it was strong)

  • The Japanese clap differently like vertically and both hands move the same.

  • Benton, Lucy, and Eugene (Lucy’s assistant coach) got in the hotel elevator, and Benton leaned against a corner, not realizing that was where all the buttons were, so we stopped at most floors between 3 and 8 on our way to floor 8.
